Shopping Local and Independent – 1 mum, 1 week and a 5 mile radius…

Wicked plans brewing!Since I started my own business popping up on the High Street (amongst other things!) I have become increasingly aware of the dire state of our local High Streets. Despite the growth of impressive independent shops trying hard to be noticed amongst the shadows of Sainsbury’s and Tesco, it is both convenient and inexpensive to utilise the latter so that is exactly what we do.

I have two children, and a full time job but I really want to see if I can actually, not only shop local, but independently for a week. No chain stores, nothing I couldn’t walk/cycle/drag the kids to… Last year I ran Hellrunner and the Kamikaze adventure races just to see if I could, so as challenges go this won’t require any training… Or will it?

I’ve given myself a week to prepare (and chosen a week when my husband is away for three days  (‘What are you doing now? Why would you want to do that?’). Good point, as we are both madly busy, planning a self build, juggling childcare, work, running club, all the usual things. But really, that is the point – we’re normal. Every family I know does all the things we do (okay maybe not the self build) so I want to find out if I can actually do this…

We live in a village (a big one now all the new building sites are nearly finished), with a medium sized town within my self-imposed radius and my experiment is perfectly in keeping with the current worries about sustainability of rural developments.

Now to the planning…

  1. Great idea for an experiment – it’ll be interesting to see how you get on. It’s much easier here in Germany where the local butchers, bakers and candlestick makers still exist.
